A family office can be designed to serve one family exclusively (single family office) or to serve a number of affluent families (multi-family office). Recent Dodd-Frank regulations, announced in early 2013, clarify that a properly structured single family office is not required to register with or report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an investment adviser, but a multi-family office is not exempt and must comply with extensive registration, reporting, record-keeping and other requirements. Successfully navigating these regulations is critical to a family office’s design and success.
